Sarasota County means sun, surf and shells. No day at the beach is complete without a walk along the Gulf of Mexico looking at shells. There are so many to see but many prominent types include buttercup and sailor’s ear, periwinkle, cockles, auger, worm, scallop and the colorful coquina. (Everybody loves coquina).

Here is a word of warning for those who want to take the shells home; shells are houses and it is quite possible that they are still occupied! Be sure to leave the living marine animals at the beach.
